Bored? Broke? Go old school...

Stuck for something to do this summer? With the two dominating climate issues (environmental and economic) ruining our chances for a long, hot summer, we must revert back to the simple pleasures we used to enjoy as kids. Hit your local market with 50p and stock up on some penny sweets. Myself and Miss Peel certainly enjoyed a nostalgic mix of jellied fruit, cola bottles, white chocolate mice and milk bottles. With the change from your sweet pickings, why not hit the slot machines or other arcade games? We enjoyed cardiac-benefiting games of 'Whack the Croc' for the hefty sum of 20p - your summer fun needn't cost the earth.

Even the cat needed a holiday...

On our weekend break to the small town of Settle, our furry child came with us. She has been a bit under the weather recently, but coming with us and getting some country air seems to have done her the world of good. My boyfriend snapped her conked out after running around non stop for 4 days!

The pics above are of the worlds smallest art gallery - official! The residents of Upper Settle 'adopted' their old red kiosk and have turned it into a miniature gallery, complete with a mosaic in the entrance and a visitors book.

Some of the blue sky that's been missing in Manchester recently...

Too damn cool...

There are moments in life, when you realise that your mum/dad is actually too cool to be acceptable. Such an occasion arose when I popped back to my Mum's for a BBQ. I caught her preparing the salad avec Ray Bans and a pinny declaring the slogan "I don't do housework on days that end in 'Y'". I thought she looked so fabulous so I had to photograph her. Also notice the dog in the bottom right, waiting hopeful for a stray potato.

Vote Stan

I absolutely adore this witty tee design by Mckinaz, which he has entered of the Swish Swosh T-Shirt Design Competition 2009. You can called me biased all you like but I think its a stroke of genius, with a big dollop of wit on top. The top 10 designs picked on the website will get printed onto T-shirts, so if you like me you NEED this tee in your wardrobe, VOTE STAN here >> http://www.swishswosh.com/vote/mckinaz

He wears his sunglasses at night...@ Mad Ferret Festival

A true manciunian - this guy didn't even need a ticket, he's just too cool!

Winner of the coolest tee @ Mad Ferret Festival

I snapped this girl whilst she was waiting at the bar. I thought the way she wore it as a dress and has customised it herself added bonus points.

Winner of best pixie crop @ Mad Ferret Festival

A nice change from the monotonous bleach blond crop, this laydee has gone for an array of colour in her do. Very now!

Winners of the best sunglasses @ Mad Ferret Festival

These ladies stormed the dance floor when Zinc played. J'adore the Robo Cop vibe coming from the shades on the lady on the left!

Coachella Babes @ Mad Ferret Festival

These two captured the essence of sophisticated festival wear and even managed to look incredibly chic whilst queuing for a piss. I especially adore the paint print mini dress from the one above.

The Chill Factor @ Mad Ferret Festival

Just when you thought the festival couldn't get any cooler - The Chill Factor arrived on Saturday, along with a couple tons of snow (yes, you read that correctly) and their best boarders. They put on a spectaclur matinee show cheered on by a massive crowd of pissed ferrets.

Classic Games @ Mad Ferret Festival

Over in the chill out field, classic games such as yo-yoing and hulu hooping were played by festival goers throughout the day. The print on this girls dress is exquisite, it looks so ethnic and warm.

Winner of the best Photographer's outfit @ Mad Ferret Festival

Can't really express how much I love this look. I want to steal her boots!

Tribal Rules @ Mad Ferret Festival

Tribal influences become more pronouced once the sun comes out in the summer. My mum gave me these necklaces a couple of weeks ago when my sister and I raided her jewellery box. Both of them are from Uganda and I loved the fact I saw no one with a similar necklace. I recommend borrowing your mum's bling next time!

Winner of the best jumper @ Mad Ferret Festival

I think this guy (who my friend Brendan sees EVERWHERE) stole his wicked jumper from Frank Gallager (see Shameless Season 1 Episode 2).

Winners of the best Skids (thanks Chandler!) @ Mad Ferret Festival

Gorgeous, Gorgeous, Gorgeous! New Reebok Ex-O-Fit Hi 2009 (yes, I live with someone with a sneaker fetish hence knowing the model of these trainers!)

I love a bit of tartan... Apparently, these came all the way from Bristol!
Classic Dunks, love the star details. These came from somewhere a bit further then Bristol - New York City!

He Bangs The Drums @ Mad Ferret Festival

Even captured in a picture, you can see how loud this guy was banging.

Winner of the best trousers @ Mad Ferret Festival

I admire how this guy has fused together Cruella DeVille, Austrian military chic, primary school P.E. lessons and Woody Allen to create his unforgettable look.

21st Century Pied Piper @ Mad Ferret Festival

The previously mentioned Pied Piper in action on his piano-thingy on wheels (excuse my lack of music instrument knowledge!). Check out a truly terrible quality video here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/manc-closet/3632757234/

Pissed on the Job @ Mad Ferret Festival

Only at a festival can you sell your designs but you can also get acceptably pissed whilst doing so and still look classy!

Wok's Special @ Mad Ferret Festival

Here is the amazing guy at Wok's Oriental Cuisine van, serving me with my 'special' - Sweet and Sour Pork with Battered Chicken and Spicy Vermicelli Noodles with spicy Beef and sticky rice. Needless to say afterwards, I was stuffed. Was absolutely gorgeous.

Winner of the outfit most suited to an 'Alice In Wonderland' film @ Mad Ferret Festival

Nuff said.

Musea T-Shirt Stall @ Mad Ferret Festival

The lovely people at Musea held a competition to design a tee to be sold at Mad Ferret. The winners were Kirsty Wingfield, Rossen Kuzmanov and George Lloyd. Alongside the winning designs were other cool styles, all for a bargain at £5. These three were kind enough to give me a freebie too!

Brian Flanagan @ Mad Ferret Festival

I adored how all the bar staff had quirky designed t-shirts instead of boring black polo's with the company logo embossed on the chest. This lovely chap poured me my first drink of the festival - leading to my downfall!

Fresh Prince @ Mad Ferret Festival

Love the 80's revival look topped off with a square-top!

Mad Ferret Festival @ Platt Fields Park, 12th - 13th June 2009

7500 people, 250ft of bars, 100 DJ's, 60 bands, 17 hours, 9 stages, 2 days, 1 park, 1 mad ferret. This is what the posters across Manchester promised to give us at 5pm on Friday, when the festival officially opened. Unfortunately, they got one thing wrong - there wasn't just 1 mad ferret... there were thousands!

It seemed that the entire student population plus some had decided to descend upon Platt Fields Park for 2 days of mayhem. We were treated to some big names such as the delectable Roots Manuva and the lyrical Mike Skinner in The Streets, we grooved to some of the best beats by the noisy Stanton Warriors and the mighty Pendulum, and we stayed true to our favourite Manchester outfits such as Riot Jazz, Oh My God, Hit & Run and Prostitutes and Policemen.

Musea and The Chapel were behind such a high standard of art and decoration at the festival. Q
With a quirky array of sculptures, live graffiti and interactive stalls, they really added to the unique and independent spirit of Mad Ferret. My particular favourite was the kitsch stand selling cakes and offering 20's make overs (see below).

We were blessed with decent weather on Friday, which turned to gorgeous sunshine on Saturday. The 2nd day of the festival began at 12pm, so the early afternoon saw many people sunbathing outside the bar tents! As well as the generous 9 stages, there were several attractions that could not be confined to a defined space. At some point on Friday (my memory did not record times due to copious amounts of Kopparberg), the modern day incarnation of the Pied Piper appeared. A man, his top hat and tails, his electric piano/synthesizer/accordion/organ on wheels and his entourage of drummers and strummers gathered a small crowd who followed them round the field, jiving to their German-techno-fairground-bohemia melee of music. It was a surreal experience.

Oh and the food? Well, I personally was in heaven with the range of eats available at such as small festival. After seeing Oasis at Heaton Park last week, I was expecting much of the same - pie and peas and the obligatory burger van. Not at Mad Ferret. Huge woks filled with gourmet Chinese delights, ginormous steel pans filled with spinach and chickpea curry, organic vegetarian tasties and yes there was the obligatory burger van, which sold Aberdeen Angus beef and pulled pork. Oh and the gorgeous authentic bangers stall which sold Thai Curry sausages. Mmmmm!

I definitely felt I got more than my moneys worth this weekend with a hangover the size of Canada to prove it. It was so refreshing to be in a festival with virtually no corporate branding in sight, independent labels dominating alongside charities and NGO's. The whole vibe was upbeat and this extended to the security guards on the entrance gate, the car park attendants who kindly watched my bike for me and even the police outside. Mad Ferret has now established itself as the officially end of the year and will be around for many years to come. Roll on next year!

Contender for Liverpool's most beautiful man?

One of my favourite pictures taken recently...

Trick of the Light @ Mistabishi

Not only did I adore this ladies embelished camisole and flashing sunglasses combo, but she was responsible for some of the serious shapes thrown around the dance floor that night. I love how the light has hit her in this picture, giving her yellow horns!

They drink it in the Congo @ Mistabishi

Way down deep in the middle of the Congo,
A hippo took an apricot, a guava and a mango.
He stuck it with the others, and he danced a dainty tango.
The rhino said, "I know, we'll call it Um Bongo"
Um Bongo, Um Bongo, They drink it in the Congo.
The python picked the passion fruit, the marmoset the mandarin.
The parrot painted packets, that the whole caboodle landed in.
So when it comes to sun and fun and goodness in the jungle,
They all prefer the sunny funny one they call Um Bongo!

Mistabishi @ Oh My God, Opus, 29.05.09

Another stonking night ensued last week as the Oh My God delivered on fine form. Pulling Hospital's prodigal son, Mistabishi, the dance floor was packed all night with people fighting for the right to rave. Wizzdom caused chaos with his eclectic mix of liquid, jump-up and classic heavy-weight tracks. If you get a chance to see Wizzdom go, as this guy is gonna be big one day.
Mistabishi was delicious. He has such a varied cartel of amazing tunes, so each set he plays can go in any direction. His innovative "Printer Jam" got the crowds suitably hyped, which is quite an achievement considering the song is made entirely from the sounds of printers! When he played my favourite, "No Matter What" everyone seemed to sway in unison to the piano and heavy bass harmony. Mistabishi's LP "Drop" is out now and is a must for any bass lovers collection. Check out the pictures from the night here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/manc-closet/sets/72157619216308621/show/

Girls not so loud...

I caught these trendy lasses grabbing a hot dog behind the Printworks. They had just finished watching Girls Aloud at the MEN (they said they were shit) and I managed to grab a cheeky shot of them before one of them had to go and puke!

Revision Break

If like me, you have been stuck in revision hell, then I suggest you take a much needed break this Friday. There are even statistics which prove that a bit of R & R helps the mind concentrate better on exams. So, unless you have an exam on Saturday (which would be the cruelest), then wiggle on down to Oh My God this Friday. Mistabishi is billed to play amonst others, and he alone is worth the £5 entry fee. Good luck with exams and hope to see you on Friday!

Footgasm

Every once in a while, a force inside me rages up with such an intensity, I loose the ability to think of anything else. This force is my shoe lust, and only rears its wicked head when my eyes fall upon a pair of shoes so fabulous, I know that I need them. As with the start of every summer, I begin to edit my closet to make space for the ubiquitous summer outfits for festivals, BBQ's, seaside trips and days in the park. Out with the jumper dresses and snow boots, in with the cropped shorts and RayBan's. When I found this pair of sandals, which I can only describe as fucking brilliant, my shoe lust took over. I am now on a one track mission to hunt down a pair (they were apparently only sold in New York), as I feel these sandals could translate into any outfit. If anyone has any leads - please let me know...

Grunge Babe @ Caspa, The House That Dub Built

Grunge Babe sported another hot hot trend - patterned leggings from Manchester-based brand Daddy Long Legs. Saffle a pair here http://women.fashionbeans.com/womens-fashion-clothing/exclusive-daddy-long-legs-lace-leopard-leggings/. Her graphic tee was from a boutique in London.

Ethnic Jetset Collective @ Caspa, The House That Dub Built

The ethnic jetset collective wore a mixture of clothes from around the world. From the left, jetsetter wears a piece of fabric from Kenya as a dress, and the cardi was her mother's ex boyfriends. The middles sports sexy checkered chinos, tee and blazer from Berlin and the right wears a dress and head scarf from Peru.

Mckinaz AKA Bend @ Caspa, House That Dub Built

Call me biased but I had much love for my DJing partner Bend's outfit (thanks for the free tickets too)! His trench is by Supremebeing from a shop called Reef. His shirt was from H&M and his tee is by a Preston-based artist called Hicalorie (check out his website here http://www.hicalorie.com/index.htm). He also mentioned that his jeans came with a bottle opener - handy!

MC Yates @ Caspa, House That Dub Built

MC Yates was ahead of the game, sporting one of the hottest trends this summer - peacocks! Her long printed tee-dress was a bargain at £6 from Primark and her bag was from Cult Clothing. Matthew Williamson's collection for H&M features all things peacock so do an MC Yates and gt the look.

T-Bar @ Caspa, House That Dub Built

T-Bar's choice of a jazzy blue tee was a good'n for the event. At first glance I thought his t-shirt would have come straight from the early 90's but he actually bought it from T K Maxx. They have a huge selection of men's t-shirts at rock bottom prices so I recommend you check it out if you want to look as cool as T-Bar!

Arrive In Style @ Caspa, House That Dub Built

Forget your Chanel Bike and Hybrid Limo, I have discovered the ultimate way to arrive at an event in style. This motley crew arrived on a 5yr old pink girls bike, a plastic red push-car and a multi-coloured tricycle. The heralded their arrival by creating a holy racket cruising down the street heading to the Jabez. They then proceeded to produce numerous bike locks to chain up their rides before heading in for a big rave-up. I am currently looking for a mini tracker to go to my next event...

Caspa @ The House That Dub Built, Jabez Clegg (15.05.09)

It was the night I had been waited for. Caspa. I was lucky enough that my partner in crime won 2 free tickets, so no queuing for us! The Jabez is an appropriate space for a night like The House That Dub Built, with a smaller room playing reggae all night and a larger room to stage the main acts. The tunes were proper funky in the reggae room, giving us a good warm up before Caspa. The drinks were nice and cheap, not masses of choice but they sold beer so I was happy.

We shashayed into the main room in anticipation for Caspa's arrival. Nucleus Roots was mixing some pretty creamy dubstep tracks and everyone was skanking nicely. Then Caspa took to the decks and began with a track so liquid it was like being covered in honey. This didn't last long however, before he plunged into some killer drops and played some of the best dubstep tracks of the moment (I have listed the tracks I remember him playing below). The room was so hot, I don't think I've sweated that much since being semi naked in Bora Bora last summer, and they only thought to switch the air-con on after Caspa had finished. The system wasn't the best and I don't think Caspa was that impressed. He said after, "system was shit but the Manx were proper! Big up all the ravers!". He set was amazing, and I am very much looking forward to seeing him at Mad Ferret Festival in June. Check out all the pictures from the night here http://www.flickr.com/photos/manc-closet/sets/72157618328760530/show/

Songs from Caspa's Set (from memory)
  • TC - Where's My Money (Caspa Remix)
  • La Roux - In For The Kill (Skream's 'Let's Get Ravey' Remix)
  • Caspa - Cockney Thug
  • Deadmau5 - I Remember (Caspa Remix)
  • Rusko - Jehova

I Want All Of Them!

As much as I love clothes, if some gave me a £10 to spend, I would spend it on accessories. I have enough pairs of earrings to wear a different pair every day and I own more scarves than skirts. I found this amazing shop on Ebay called LovePalyPaly, and almost all the jewellery is handmade like this gorgeous necklace. There are loads of amazing kitsch pieces that I want, and recommend you have a look. I especially love the Scrabble jewellery which I will be buying asap. The postage is always 80p which is a bargain considering Ebayers often make money on high postage. Also, it always feels nice to wear something independent and different from all the Topshop that adorns many features. Check out the shop
